Madam Wokie presents uniforms to pupils of the Kroo Bay Community School, Freetown

In support of the Government of Sierra Leone's Free Quality School Education Initiative, Maryann Kaikai, Creative Director of Madam Wokie, donated uniforms to all pupils of the We Yone Child Foundation Kroo Bay Community Primary School in Freetown. The donation follows from Madam Wokie's 2015 donation of uniforms and school materials to the Athens of Africa Primary School in Waterloo. Dr Yakama Manty Jones, founder of the Yak Jones Foundation, complimented Madam Wokie's efforts by donating 600 books, pens and pencils to all pupils of the school.

The We Yone Child Foundation was founded by Santigie Bayo Dumbuya in 1996 in Kroo Bay and George Brook.The non-governmental organisation aims to provide education and community development to some of Freetown's most disadvantaged communities. The organisations mission is to provide sustainable education and care to underprivileged children in the poorest areas of Freetown and overcome the social and environmental problems that deepen and perpetuate the cycle of poverty in these areas. The Foundation's programmes include primary education; extra-curricular activities; a secondary school subsidy project; livelihood support: Family Business Schemes (FBS); child protection/advocacy; girls counselling and women's rights advocacy; Girls speak out project (UKAM II); health education and healthcare support; and emergency and disaster management.

Since 1996, the We Yone Child Foundation has built three primary schools for over 700 students and trained teachers to maintain and manage education in these schools. The Foundation has also provided livelihood support to over 200 families with business grants, monitoring and sustainability schemes. Following the Ebola crisis , the We Yone Child Foundation conducted health education campaigns in 17 different isolated slum communities.

Accepting the uniforms and stationary on behalf of the pupils and parents, the Head Teacher thanked Maryann Kaikai for her support. He highlighted the pupils zest for learning and expressed his commitment to creating a safe, conducive environment for learning. He noted that the uniforms and stationary would go a long way in alleviating the financial costs of education to parents and the Foundation. He called on Madam Wokie and other Sierra Leoneans to assist the school with water and sanitation facilities which currently pose a huge challenge to the health and safety of the pupils. Maryann Kaikai pledged to do her best to ensure that pupils of the We Yone Child Foundation Kroo Bay Community Primary School get water and sanitation facilities at the earliest possible time.
